Smilkstein, a teacher and retired professor at North Seattle Community College, describes how teachers can create and deliver curricula that helps students become motivated, successful, and natural learners. She describes how the brain is already programmed to learn and how educators can use a natural way to teach that focuses on how the brain learns best. She also discusses student learning styles, multiple intelligences, and disabilities; a method for developing and delivering student-centered lessons; and curricula examples across the disciplines. This edition has been updated to include guidelines for using the six-step natural human learning process for lesson planning and test preparation; new information on the impact of technology and the Internet on student learning; and information on ADD, ADHD, autism, and gifted students. This well-written book is easy to understand and addresses a very important issue in education today. The book focuses on recent brain research that supports a student-centered learning approach in the teaching/learning process. Milkstein "sees students as wanting and able to learn when they have the opportunity to learn by the brain's natural learning process." The first few chapters focus on areas of brain research and neuroscience, and later chapters present practical learning/teaching curriculum principles and practices. The author is very well qualified to write on this topic, and the book has extensive reference and bibliographic sections. This book will interest higher education faculty and K-12 teachers and would be an excellent supplemental text to undergraduate education method courses. An excellent reference for K-12 educators. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. Copyright 2003 American Library Association
