  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2017 October #2
The Seedlings: Wild Animals series, geared toward introducing new readers to the animal kingdom, adds a few more creatures to its ranks. With its clear layout and solid design, each volume provides rudimentary details about each animal, including facts on habitat, diets, the young, and evolutionary adaptations. Though it mentions several different species, Wild Horses remains broad in its coverage as it discusses how these animals stay fed and safe. A table of contents offers chapter titles, though these headings don't appear on the pages themselves, and some volumes are more specific than others (geckos "live all around the world. But no geckos live in Antarctica"; whereas flamingos are only described as living "by warm, salty water"). Still, the glossy photographs steal the show, showing the animals in portraits and in action, and the straightforward text is well suited to beginning readers. A final photographic spread closes each volume with a labeled diagram of the featured animal, zooming in on details like scales and feathers. Preschool-Grade 1. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2015 May #2
The oversize books in the Amazing Animal series are notable for their extraordinary photographs. From the large close-ups on the cover to the 10 or so photos inside, these pictures are heads above most series photography. The books are also handsomely designed, with the spare yet informative text bolstered by photo captions. All of the books include the animals' habits, life cycles, and descriptions of how they function within their environment. Wild Horses explains the three kinds of horses that roam today on several continents. The action shots here—stampeding horses—will attract attention. Though there's not a lot of information in these series titles, there's enough for short reports. But the books will also get heavy use by browsers who will be oohing and aahing at the up-close-and-personal art. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.
  • Horn Book Guide Reviews : Horn Book Guide Reviews 2015 Fall
Vivid photographs providing up-close views of the daily lives and behavior of the title mammals are the highlights of these slim volumes. Minimal texts touch on habitat, appearance, diet, and offspring, and supply a folk-story answer to a question about each creature (e.g., "Why do beavers slap their tails on water? People in Florida tell a story about this..."). Reading list, websites. Ind. [Review covers these Amazing Animals titles: Beavers, Brown Bears, and Wild Horses.]
  • Horn Book Guide Reviews : Horn Book Guide Reviews 2018 Fall
These attractive books provide basic facts about their subjects, including habitats, physical appearances, family relationships, diets, and behaviors. Spare texts in large type and bright, eye-catching photos make the information accessible to new nonfiction readers. A concluding spread features an anatomically labeled photo of the animal and a couple of close-ups of specific features. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind. PreS-Gr 1—These new titles in this well-established series provide basic information on various animals: feeding habits, reproduction, habits, and more. The large font size, simple sentences, clean layout, and pared down back matter make these selections ideal for readers making their first forays into nonfiction. The information presented is to be expected. However, what sets these offerings apart are the sumptuous, full-page photographs, featuring these breathtaking beasts in their natural habitats. A quick and effective way to beef up any 590 section.
