Profiting from literacy : creating a sustainable workplace literacy program

Summary: This report summarizes the findings of a two-year research project funded by the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. It builds on previous research that demonstrates the benefits of improving the literacy skills of adult learners through their workplaces. Workplace literacy programs are a key approach to enhancing employees' ability to succeed in their jobs, in their personal lives and in their communities. This report is based on a review of relevant literature, an international survey, regional focus groups, and case study interviews involving employers, unions, training and adult learning practitioners, government representatives and other learning partners (Preface). This report is designed for practitioners and program developers in the area of workplace literacy.
