The authors describe place-based learning as a means to promote engagement and authenticity in education. They explain why place-based learning is important, then six design principles for this type of learning: community as classroom, learner-centered education, inquiry-based learning, incorporating local and global thinking and investigation, using design thinking to find solutions to authentic problems, and making learning interdisciplinary, ending with a how-to guide. Included throughout are examples of how the principles are used in schools. Ark is an educational advisor and advocate, Liebtag is an educational advocate and former teacher, and McClennen leads a blended-learning program that combines online learning with a place-based approach.
