Based on the belief that teachers often have had limited opportunities to study the math they have to teach, this book addresses the concepts and skills that teachers need to understand to teach basic math. Each chapter is focussed on an important math topic, and explains concepts, terms, and when available research on why some students have difficulty with a specific idea or skill. The activities in each chapter are followed by a thorough discussion of the math involved (with answers!). While this book was designed for professional development of school teachers, it has also been used to train adult literacy practitioners.
