‡aThis book examines the origins of poor literacy and numeracy skills in adulthood as well as what can be done to improve them. The editors bring together the results of longitudinal studies that greatly extend our knowledge of what works and what does not work in raising skills levels. Although there are a growing number of longitudinal studies in adult basic education that have been completed or are in progress, no systematic compilation of findings and methods has yet been undertaken. This book bridges this gap and draws together findings from a variety of longitudinal studies. The research embraces a range of methodological approaches from quantitative (statistical modeling) and qualitative (biographical) investigations. Importantly, this volume greatly enhances understandings of the operation of the adult education programs and their impact on basic skills development in adults by examining what works and for what reasons in addresses adult literacy and numeracy. |
