This is the program manual for the 2-day "Introduction to family literacy" workshop by the Centre for Family Literacy. The program provides participants with a basic understanding of the role of literacy in the life of children, their parents and the community. It explores the following topics: A short history of literacy, How literacy is perceived today, Adult literacy, Family literacy, The role of oral language in childrens literacy development, Emergent (early) literacy development. The role of environmental print in emergent literacy development and the Parental role in emergent literacy development. The workshop provides participants with many opportunities to be actively involved in examining and developing strategies to support family literacy activities. This is the manual that is provided to all participants. It contains the DVD "I love when you read" and the booklet "Stress-free reading at home".
