Late again!

Summary: "Of the Grass Roots Press "Humour series" books, written at a grade 1 level, "Late Again" is the only one I would recommend at all - it is mildly funny although more slapstick than real. I think that materials that need to be at this basic level are very hard to write because there are not enough words to engage one in the story. Mostly what is missing is a description of the feelings of the participants - they "do" things but they never express emotions. I think if I were a very basic reader I'd rather struggle through something better than this - probably my own stories or ones written by other students. I'm always reluctant to post a critical review, but this series is important to know about as they are Canadian and at such a basic level of language. Also the pictures in the book are excellent and the layout is good. ESL instructors may find these appropriate." – January 2009
