Creating a bridge : a snapshot of ESL literacy in Ontario : research report
Summary:
This study builds a profile of the adult ESL literacy learner and the language training programs offered in Ontario (and across Canada). The study explores the barriers faced by ESL literacy learners due to lack of education, sheer unfamiliarity with written language, and having to learn in a foreign language. The study also looks at barriers faced by ESL programs such as an overall lack of support in place for the unique demands of the ESL classroom, the lack of professional development opportunities, inappropriate or lack of funding, underdeveloped understanding of literacy theory, and inadequate outreach. The study is based on information collected from March to September 2006 using web discussion forum, interviews and surveys.
