Measures of success : assessment and accountability in adult basic education Cover Image Book Book

Measures of success : assessment and accountability in adult basic education / edited by Pat Campbell.

Summary:

From publisher's website: In Measures of Success, 13 known and respected practitioners and researchers explore the theory and practice of assessment and accountability. The contributing authors include Jay Derrick, Kathryn Ecclestone, Juliet Merrifield, Jan Hagston, Dave Tout, Ralf St. Clair, Alisa Belzer, Katrina Grieve, William Fagan, Robin Millar, Karen Geraci, Christine Pinsent-Johnson, and Pat Campbell. Building on the premise that literacy is complex and multi-faceted, the authors define the dominant types of assessment tools and then shift to the broader questions of assessment for whom and for what. In Part 1, the authors describe standardized, diagnostic, competency-based, and performance-based assessment tools. In Part 2, the authors provide insight into the assessment and accountability systems in Canada, the United States, Scotland, England, Wales, and Australia. Part 3 provides a set of seven key principles to guide effective accountability systems. The accompanying DVDS are an ideal training tool for workshops and in-services. The diagnostic assessment DVD demonstrates how to administer and interpret a diagnostic assessment. (Running time: 25 minutes.) The performance assessment DVD demonstrates an interview, portfolios, building a rubric, and demonstrations. (Running time: 27:30 minutes)
"This book is invaluable as a reference for ABE assessment processes and philosophies. Numerous approaches and practices are reviewed. I particularly value the final chapter on 'Key Principles for Accountability Systems' - a clear guide for anyone involved in evaluation of adult literacy learners." – March 2009 Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews.
"Measures of Success is an important book for adult literacy educators, program developers and directors, and researchers. It documents the good, the bad, and the ugly among assesment practices in six countries. It certainly will be used as a touchstone for future work in literacy assessment for adults, assessment that should be a movement toward ever-expanding goals and accomplishments...." – December 2008 Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews.
