A project funded by the National Literacy Secretariat through the Adult Literacy Cost-Shared Program. This publication describes the WISH Learning Centre, a drop-in program aimed at female sex-trade workers in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and its activities. Activities include: role plays, crafts, beauty tips/self care, reading, writing and math games. Contains testimonies and quotes from DTES women learners. Includes worksheets and detailed materials lists for use in learner group activities.
"This book has such great ideas for literacy classes. Also, it had a lot of insight into how to facilitate literacy classes for homeless women. There was information about what worked/did not work when facilitating such classes. I am teaching a creative writing class at a women's homeless shelter, and this was the most relevant and insightful resource I have found. Thank you!" – September 2010 Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews.
"This is a well thought out, clear and highly practical resource - I will definitely apply what I learned in my education work with marginalized women. I LOVE the inspiring resources from the WISH Learning Centre." – November 2009 Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews.
